Top Tips:

  1. Think about your local break - are the waves powerful or soft?

  2. What water temps are you riding - a heavy 5mm winter suit will add kgs to your weight, so you might want to add volume.

  3. How often do you surf? Are you looking for something for an extra special secret spot or a board that will go easy in a range of conditions.

Are you a beginner surfer?

Intermediate or looking to develop?

Epoxy or hardboards are your next step, most people will jump from a foamie to a midlength board with a more rigid build that allows for more manoeuvrability. Strong upper body? Maybe go hard & short!

Surf Etiquette

  1. Right of Way (Priority): The surfer closest to the peak—where the wave breaks first—has priority.
  2. Don't Drop In: Never catch a wave that someone else is already riding. If you accidentally do, apologize and exit the wave immediately.
  3. Don't Snake: Do not paddle around a surfer who is already in position to steal priority. This is considered disrespectful, often called "snaking".
  4. Paddle Safely: When paddling out, go around the breaking wave (the "shoulder"). Do not paddle through the peak or in front of a surfer currently riding a wave.
  5. Control Your Board: Avoid ditching your board, especially when others are nearby. Wearing a leash is essential, but it is not a substitute for controlling your equipment - it helps you protect your investment too!
  6. Apologize: Mistakes happen. A simple, polite apology goes a long way if you make a mistake, drop in, or get in the way.
  7. Respect the Ocean: Do not litter and always respect the environment.
